1. Usage characteristics and working environment
Usage characteristics: As a key component in hydraulic or pneumatic systems, the piston rod needs to withstand alternating loads, impacts, and vibrations. Therefore, the selected material should have good mechanical properties, such as high strength, high toughness, and good fatigue resistance.
Work environment: Consider the working environment in which the piston rod is located, such as temperature, humidity, corrosiveness, etc. For example, piston rods working in high temperature or corrosive environments need to be made of materials that are resistant to high temperatures or corrosion.
2. Accuracy and surface quality
Accuracy requirement: The machining accuracy of the piston rod is crucial for its operation in the system. The selected material should be easy to process and able to ensure high-precision machining requirements.

Common materials and their characteristics
45 # steel: a high-quality carbon structural steel with moderate hardness, easy cutting processing, and good comprehensive mechanical properties after quenching and tempering treatment. Commonly used for manufacturing piston rods with general precision.
40Cr steel: a medium carbon quenched and tempered steel with excellent comprehensive mechanical properties and fatigue resistance. Suitable for manufacturing shaft components with medium precision and high rotational speed, such as piston rods in transmission systems with large impact forces and heavy loads.
Stainless steel: materials such as 304, 316, 402, etc., have good corrosion resistance and heat resistance. Commonly used for manufacturing piston rods that work in corrosive environments, such as those in hydraulic cylinders.
Other materials: According to special requirements, other materials such as aluminum alloy, titanium alloy, etc. can also be selected. These materials have the characteristics of lightweight, high strength, and good corrosion resistance, but the cost is relatively high.
